Consultation on the ICO Plan 2012-2015
We are asking for the views of stakeholders on the ICO Plan 2012-2015. The ICO Plan details the strategic outcomes the ICO is seeking and how the ICO intends to achieve these outcomes over the next three years. In effect the Plan combines the business and corporate plans developed for previous years into one, more focused, document. It will be reviewed annually.
The consultation closed on 20 March 2012. The ICO Plan 2012-2015 has now been finalised and is available on our Plans and priorities page.
Consultation on revisions to the Assessment notices code of practice
In April 2010 we were given powers to issue assessment notices which allow us to undertake compulsory audits of government departments. We were required to issue a code of practice to explain how we will conduct these audits. We are now consulting on proposed amendments to the code of practice.
The consultation closed on 12 March 2012.
Revising publication schemes under sections 19 and 20 of the Freedom of Information Act
The ICO has launched a consultation on the revision of its model publication scheme, under sections 19 and 20 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
Consultation on changes to the monetary penalties guidance
In 2010 the ICO published statutory guidance on monetary penalties under section 55C (1) of the Data Protection Act. We have consulted on a proposed revision of that guidance because the Information Commissioner has new powers to issue monetary penalty notices for serious breaches of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.
This consultation closed on 27 September 2011.
Consultation on the ICO's Information Rights Strategy
The ICO's Information Rights Strategy is being introduced in the light of our commitment to integrate our data protection and freedom of information activities wherever we can. It replaces our former, separate data protection and freedom of information strategies.
The strategy describes the purpose for which the ICO exists and explains how we go about achieving this purpose.
The ICO’s goal is to achieve a sustained reduction in risks to the upholding of information rights so that ultimately:
- all organisations collect and use personal information responsibly, securely and fairly;
- all public authorities are open and transparent, providing people with access to official information as a matter of course;
- people are aware of their information rights and are confident in using them;
- people understand how their personal information is used and are able to take steps to protect themselves from misuse.
This consultation closed on 12 August 2011.
Data Sharing Code of Practice
The public consultation on the Data Sharing Code of Practice ran from October 2010 to January 2011. The code was published on 11 May 2011. There were over 100 responses to the consultation from organisations and individuals. A number of changes and improvements were made in the light of those responses.
ICO Consultation - Privacy Impact Assessment - Data Protection Register
Please note that this consultation is now closed.
The ICO is required by law to make the register available for inspection and does this via the ICO website. We are currently exploring the possibility of making the register available to be downloaded in its entirety, in a reusable format.
There will be a number of potential benefits from making this data available. For example, opening the data up will allow others to combine, analyse and gain new insights from it. The principles of open data have also been recently set out in the Protection of Freedoms Bill.
However, a number of entries on the register relate to individuals, such as sole traders, and there are therefore data protection considerations. For example, is it fair that data collected for a statutory purpose is made available in a form that could make it more widely available and usable?
We requested your views on what the impact on individuals would be if the register was available to download as a dataset, in a re-usable format, in its entirety. The consultation closed on 8 April 2011.
